Nintendo Switch 2 – What’s Next and What I Think

Since Nintendo just announced the “Successor to the Switch” will be coming out before April 2025, I thought it would be a good idea to look at some of the theories that have been springing up about it. We’ll explore things from specs to possible launch titles. Let’s dive in!

Theorized Hardware and Specs

Chips

As far as I know (or almost anyone for that matter), the specs for the Switch 2’s chip is unknown. With the original using a Nvidia Tegra, it’s possible it will have another Nvidia chip, or an entirely different one. Either way, it’s almost certain that any chip in there will be a lot better than the Tegra.

RAM

Most speculations for the next Switch think that the RAM will be doubled – from 4GB to 8GB, and I think that’s pretty reasonable. With the state Nintendo’s in right now, a major RAM upgrade would be amazing for marketing and just in general (so more power-intensive games can be played).

The Gimmicks

The 3DS had 3D, the Wii had motion controls, and the Switch had swappable controllers. So what’s next? One of the theories is nothing. Nothing other than hardware upgrades. But would after 7 years of working the only result being more RAM be like Nintendo? Most likely they will have magnetic JoyCons, and some crazy thing we’ve never even heard of!

Possible Launch Titles

A new 3D Mario

Mario Odyssey was amazing. The second switch game I ever bought, the day it arrived was spent staring at the cover art until I had time to play it. For a month, it was the only thing I played. Will there be another one? Honestly, probably not. In this retrospective I watched, it was said that Nintendo should cross their 2D and 3D Mario series for a groundbreaking game. I don’t think that will end up being Mario Odyssey 2.

Splatoon 4

This might be the one I’m most excited for. Splatoon 3 devs ended support a couple months ago (as of mid-december 2024), and the theme that won the Grand Fest (past) will most likely influence the game if it’s released. I’m guessing a medieval Japanese hub world and some influence of that in the story mode.

Gamecube/Wii Remasters

Twilight Princess, Windwaker, Mario Galaxy 2. These are the games that we’ve been waiting for Nintendo! The company seems very remaster-happy, but won’t give us the games a lot of people actually want! Maybe they’re waiting for better hardware to remake, but hopefully these will be added some way or another. I’d pay!

NOTE – this will be updated and when the device is actually released I’ll look at this post and see which theories ended up being right.
